🏆 In January, The Yappie was named a semi-finalist in President’s Innovation Challenge at Harvard University. As part of the competition, we were accepted into the Harvard Innovation Labs’ Spring Venture Program and are now competing for a grand prize of up to $75,000, which we hope to use to bolster our original reporting of AAPI issues.
✍️ The Yappie’s Andrew Peng, Javan Santos, and Mary Yang recently wrapped up a feature story for the Harvard Asian American Policy Review focused on efforts to advance data disaggregation. We expect the piece will be published in the coming months (more soon) and want to thank Sarah Lin and Zizhan Luo for the opportunity.
🎉 On Thursday, The Yappie was awarded $10,000 as a winner of the 2022 Next Challenge for Media & Journalism, supported by American Public Media Group's Glen Nelson Center. We will use this grant to compensate our contributors and expand our work on topics already familiar to longtime readers, such as digital disinformation.
🗳️ The Yappie is also one of ten newsrooms launching reporting projects as part of the Solutions Journalism Network’s Advancing Democracy initiative. In collaboration with our friends and partners at Self Evident and AZI, our team is currently producing several in-depth stories focused on how AAPI communities are tackling barriers to American democracy, which will roll out by May 2022.
