The mass shooting in Monterey Park, California that left 10 people dead on Saturday heightened fears among Asian Americans nationwide during one of the community’s most important cultural events of the year, The Yappie’s Mary Yang and Shawna Chen write.

While officials say it’s too early to determine the motive for the attack, Asian American lawmakers and advocates swiftly expressed concern that the shooting could fuel other acts of violence against the community—especially after local authorities reported that an unidentified individual called in a threat about “finish[ing] the job.”
